Stuck in front of the house with a dead battery. It’s been over a week since I left the house so I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised. The battery’s a couple of years old, but I really don’t know how long they should hold a charge when you’re not driving.
Any idea how long I should drive before shutting it off?
I did check the tightness of the connectors, but of course my 10mm dropped into a gap between the engine and transmission. After a few attempts I did retrieve it, but of course not without slicing my hand...

From my experience, half an hour is usually good for a recharge.

If you can afford it I would recommend getting a battery tender. I use them on my cars I don’t drive often and they work great. The one I got at NAPA was $50 or so. Otherwise I think running around an hour should do it.

I use a battery pack that I bought from Costco. Charges my phone and jumps my car if the battery gets weak.

A week? Before I changed my battery I had to hope it would turn on after not driving my car for a mere 8 hours.

When I lived in NYC and kept my car at my parents, I could usually let it go a couple months without charging without issue, though I’m sure it wasn’t great for the battery’s health.
For a completely dead battery, I try to do an hour of driving. Really sucks to underestimate.

I’m unemployed right now, so my need to drive is minimal. But a week and a half ago I had a very nasty fall and haven’t recovered. Sitting is a challenge, and since I can’t drive standing up...

I really ought to get one of those.

I have a good battery charger, but since I have to park on the street there isn’t an easy way to plug in. I could pop the battery out, but that’ll be a bit of a hassle. I think I just need to fire it up every few days and I should be ok.

It wasn’t completely dead, but didn’t have the oomph to fire up the engine. It doesn’t help that it was below freezing today. The battery is about two years old so it should be OK, but perhaps I’ll have it tested.

I've used it to jump other people's cars more than I used it for my own car. A couple asked where I got it.
